Silhouette of a signpost against sunset

Did you heave yourself out of bed this morning at the prospect of a day ahead doing a job that fills you with dread, anxiety and fatigue?

A few years back I was in that exact situation.

I met up with a good friend of mine and started my routine list of complaints about my job, my frustrations, how I wasn’t happy, blah, blah, blah. Frankly she was fed up with hearing me bitch and moan about it. I was even bored of hearing myself bitch and moan about it!

Then she said “Claire, when are you going to do something about this? Next time I see you I want you to have done something about it.”

That’s what it took to give me the push I needed. I didn’t want to let her down. I didn’t want the embarrassment of seeing her the next time and saying I hadn’t done anything.

Three months later I had a new job.

Yay! Right? Well not quite.

A couple of years later I knew I was in the same situation. My friend’s voice was loud and clear in my mind. I was determined not the make the same mistake and put up with it again.

This time I did something different. Something that I believe we should all do, preferably at regular intervals in our lives…

I took a step back and looked at what I really wanted to do.

I spent a lot of time soul searching. Working out what makes ME happy. Not what I thought other people would think I should do. I took the time to put MYSELF and MY LIFE at the centre.

It was this process that has set me on the path I am on today. I have retrained. I am making the most of the skills that come naturally to me. I am doing something that I love. That is worth getting out of bed for EVERY DAY!

So when your internal voice is “bitching and moaning” about that job that leaves you feeling unfulfilled, stressed and exhausted, I want you to know that YOU HAVE A CHOICE. You can CHANGE it. You can do anything you want to. Oh and you are NEVER TOO OLD for a new career!

Here are a few things you can do to get the ball rolling.

1. List how you would spend your weeks and months if money were no object. Think past the round the world trips, fast cars and sprawling mansions. List the things that would leave you feeling fulfilled and happy.

2. Think about your values. What is important to you in your life? What values do you live by? Try and get this list down to the key 3 to 5 values. Your future should be in sync with these values. It’s the key to being fulfilled.

3. Take a first step to that new future. Write a list of really tiny things you could do to reach your goal. This could be looking up a course, contacting someone that is doing that job to arrange a chat. Then tomorrow take another small step…

Before you know it you will be on a new path. You can do it. You do have the choice.

So before you move onto the next thing today – take 2 MINUTES to do one thing that you listed in point 3. Go on! You CAN DO IT! :)

If you know you need to make a change and would like someone to help do it, you know where I am!
